Alex Ovechkin Announces Final NHL Season with Washington Capitals

Resumen

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin said his 22nd season will be his last, confirming the decision with teammates and fans ahead of the team's upcoming campaign.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin told teammates that the 2024-25 campaign will be his final season in the NHL, marking the end of a 22-year tenure with the franchise. The announcement was made in a locker-room address that was later posted by the team on social media.

“It’s sad, but it is what it is,” Ovechkin said, adding that the decision was made after recent discussions with his family. He also said, “I love this game so much, but I know in my heart it’s the right decision.”

The 41-year-old forward signed a one-year contract during the summer and entered the season holding the league’s career goal-scoring record, which he surpassed in April 2025. The Capitals have added young players Jordan Kyrou, Alex Tuch, Boone Jenner and Vincent Desharnais in hopes of mounting another playoff run.

“We have an unbelievable team this year. Let’s make the playoffs, let’s have fun and enjoy the moment because times fly,” Ovechkin said.

Ovechkin, a former Calder Trophy winner, three-time Hart Trophy recipient and 2018 playoff MVP, spent his entire career in Washington, leading the club to its first Stanley Cup championship in 2018.
