Former "American Idol" Contestant Sentenced to Life for Wife's Murder

摘要

Caleb Flynn, a former music pastor and brief "American Idol" participant, received a life sentence without parole after being convicted of killing his wife while engaged in an extramarital affair.

A Columbus, Ohio jury found former music pastor Caleb Flynn guilty of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, a 37-year-old schoolteacher, and he was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors said Flynn staged a fake home invasion in February, claimed a burglar was responsible, and later sent a text to his lover the night before the killing that read, “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow.”

Flynn, who appeared on "American Idol" in 2013, did not testify at trial. The judge noted that he used his Christian faith to manipulate others and showed no remorse, describing the crime as marked by “layers of deceit, manipulation and cruelty.”

Family members of the victim, including Ashley’s parents and sister, addressed the court, expressing forgiveness toward Flynn but emphasizing the impact on their community. A statement from Flynn’s daughter Ava described her mother as “the perfect person,” while another daughter, Alyssa, said she would not visit him in prison.

During the proceedings, an intern from Flynn’s church testified that he expressed hatred toward his wife and discussed thoughts of killing her. Evidence presented included Flynn’s fingerprints, DNA at the scene, and mobile-device data indicating his movements inside the home, contradicting his claim that he was asleep when the shooting occurred. The murder weapon has not been recovered.
