Canadian rock singer Sass Jordan died peacefully on Friday at the age of 63, according to an Instagram post shared by her family on Saturday. The announcement said she was surrounded by relatives at the time of her death; a photograph of Jordan holding a cat accompanied the notice.

Jordan, born in Birmingham, England, moved to Montreal where she began performing in clubs at 16 and later joined the band The Pinups as bassist and vocalist. She released her debut album "Tell Somebody" in 1988 and won the Juno Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist the following year.

Her 1992 album "Racine" earned her the Billboard title of Female Rock Artist of the Year and featured the hit single "Make You a Believer," which sold roughly 450,000 copies worldwide. Jordan also contributed a duet with Joe Cocker, "Trust in Me," to the soundtrack of the 1993 film The Bodyguard.

During the 1990s she toured with major acts such as The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Aerosmith and Van Halen. In 2003 she joined the panel of judges on Canadian Idol, a role she held for six seasons.

Jordan is survived by her husband, Derek Sharp, their daughter Stella and her stepdaughter Brianne.
