Ed Sheeran adds Isaac Slade as surprise guest for Atlanta show amid tour controversy
Ed Sheeran welcomed former The Fray frontman Isaac Slade as a surprise opening act at his Atlanta concert, following the removal of Macklemore from the tour after his remarks on the Gaza conflict.
Ed Sheeran brought former The Fray frontman Isaac Slade onstage as a surprise guest for his Atlanta concert at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday. Slade performed a short set that featured the songs “How to Save a Life” and “You Found Me” before Sheeran began his own performance.
During his brief appearance, Slade commented on the ongoing conflict in Gaza, saying that “what’s happening over there is wrong” and emphasizing the need for “common ground” and a balanced approach to peace.
The stadium had hinted at a “special guest” in a pre-show social media post. Slade had previously joined Sheeran in Toronto and has cited the singer as an early influence. He left The Fray in 2022 to focus on his mental health and began a solo tour in December 2025.
Sheeran’s tour has faced disruptions after rapper Macklemore was removed following his statements supporting Palestine, which led several opening acts to quit in solidarity. Macklemore’s performances at New Jersey venues included a keffiyeh and chants calling for a free Palestine.
Sheeran later addressed the controversy, apologizing for his handling of the situation and reaffirming his commitment to keeping his concerts a “safe space for everyone.” The U.S. leg of his Loop Tour will conclude on Nov. 7 in Tampa before moving to Latin America and ending in Mexico City on Dec. 11.
