More than 70 Latino Democratic officials urged the Democratic Governors Association to allocate $10 million to support candidate Gina Hinojosa in Texas, citing a recent poll that showed her marginally ahead of incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott.
A coalition of over 70 Latino Democratic leaders sent a letter to the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) and its chair, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, requesting a $10 million investment in the Texas governor's race. The appeal follows a New York Times-Siena College poll released Saturday that placed Democratic candidate Gina Hinojosa three points ahead of Republican Governor Greg Abbott, a margin within the poll’s error range.
Hinojosa faces a significant fundraising gap, with Abbott’s campaign and allied Republicans outspending her by roughly ten to one. Beshear, who has indicated a focus on defending incumbent Democratic governors, has not yet committed additional resources to the Texas contest.
Former San Antonio mayor and 2020 presidential candidate Julián Castro reiterated the request on social media, urging the DGA to back Hinojosa "in a real way" and stating that she "can win."
Democrats are increasingly viewing Texas as a competitive battleground as the campaign enters its final weeks, despite the state's recent voting patterns favoring Republicans at the presidential level.
