Trump pledges $5,000 checks to adults if Republicans control Congress

Resumen

In a Truth Social video, President Donald Trump said a Republican win in the House and Senate would trigger $5,000 payments to every adult American, while warning that a Democratic victory would lead to an economic downturn.

President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that a Republican majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate would result in a $5,000 payment to every adult citizen of the United States. The proposal, described by the president as a "Republican Dividend," was first mentioned at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Dallas and is presented as a contrast to what he called a "disaster" under Democratic control.

"If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate, I’m going to give all adult citizens in the United States of America $5,000," Trump said in the video.

Trump warned that a Democratic victory would cause an "economic depression, much like 1929," though no economic analysis or legislative plan was provided to support that claim. He estimated the dividend would cost about $1 trillion and suggested it could be funded by tariffs and recent domestic investment, which he said totaled $21 trillion over the past 15 months.

The president did not outline eligibility criteria, funding mechanisms, or a timeline for the payments. He also referenced earlier initiatives, such as a $100 check for seniors to help with Medicare Part B premiums and a "warrior dividend" paid to service members in December 2025.

Recent polling shows mixed reactions: an Economist/YouGov survey found 45 % of likely voters opposed the checks versus 43 % in favor, and 61 % doubted Trump could deliver them. A Verasight poll indicated that 33 % of respondents said the pledge made them less likely to vote Republican, while 15 % said it made them more likely.

The White House has not responded to requests for comment on the proposal.
