NBA Investigates Clippers' Alleged Salary Cap Circumvention Involving Kawhi Leonard's Endorsement Deal
The NBA is investigating whether the Los Angeles Clippers circumvented salary cap rules through Kawhi Leonard's $28 million endorsement deal with Aspiration, a company partially funded by Clippers owner Steve Ballmer.
The NBA has initiated an investigation into allegations that the Los Angeles Clippers and owner Steve Ballmer may have circumvented league salary cap rules through a $28 million endorsement deal between star player Kawhi Leonard and Aspiration, a now-bankrupt environmental firm.
In 2021, Leonard signed a four-year, $28 million endorsement contract with Aspiration, a company in which Ballmer had invested $50 million. Reports suggest that Leonard received payments without performing significant promotional activities for the firm.
Aspiration's co-founder, Joseph Sanberg, has pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges, admitting to defrauding investors and lenders of over $248 million.
The Clippers have denied any wrongdoing. In a statement, the team asserted, "Neither the Clippers nor Steve Ballmer circumvented the salary cap."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, stating that the league has "very broad powers" to address potential violations. The NBA has retained the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz to conduct an independent investigation into the matter.
If the investigation finds that the Clippers violated salary cap regulations, the team could face substantial penalties, including fines, loss of draft picks, or the voiding of Leonard's contract.
