Skydance pledges to stay in Los Angeles amid concerns over corporate departures

Resumen

Skydance CEO David Ellison affirmed the company will remain in Hollywood, while officials note the threat of relocation has been used as leverage in recent negotiations.

Skydance announced it will keep its operations in Los Angeles, with CEO David Ellison telling staff the company "isn't going anywhere." The statement comes as the firm operates under a consent decree with California’s attorney general and 12 state attorneys general that does not obligate it to maintain a headquarters in the city.

State officials said the possibility of a move has given the company bargaining power. Rep. Laura Friedman told NBC LA that the threat of leaving was not idle and would have been "devastating for Los Angeles" if carried out. Attorney General Rob Bonta said the merged company’s future remains in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future.

Los Angeles has seen several major corporations relocate over the past 15 years, citing high living costs, taxes and regulatory challenges. Analysts such as Larry Kosmont described the pattern as a "parade of horribles," while Sarah Bohn of the Public Policy Institute of California noted that other states have improved tax and regulatory conditions, whereas California has not.

Under the current agreement, Skydance will not sell the Paramount or Warner Bros. lots for at least five years and must increase production volume, but the location of its headquarters was not specified. The issue of retaining film and television jobs in the region remains active, with federal incentives and potential state policy changes under discussion. Xavier Becerra, the Democratic nominee for governor, said he will work to keep Hollywood production in the area.
