49ers owner Jed York receives six-game suspension and $500,000 fine

Summary

The NFL suspended San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York for six games and imposed a $500,000 fine after his arrest in an Ohio prostitution sting.

The National Football League announced Friday that San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York will miss the next six games and must pay a $500,000 fine for violating the league’s personal-conduct policy. York, who has not attended any games or league meetings this season, was credited with three games already served and will be eligible to return on Oct. 20, after the team’s matchup against Washington.

York issued a statement through the franchise accepting the league’s discipline and apologising to family, staff, fans and partners. > "To my family, to the players, coaches, and employees of the San Francisco 49ers, to our fans and partners, I am deeply sorry," he said.

The suspension follows York’s August arrest by the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force in Ohio. Police said he attempted to pay $160 for sex with a woman he believed to be a prostitute. He was initially charged with engaging in prostitution, but the charge was later reduced to disorderly conduct. York pleaded no contest to that charge and to possessing criminal tools for using his phone to respond to an undercover online advertisement. He received a one-day jail sentence, served concurrently, and was fined $1,150. The $160 he had paid was seized and given to the task force, and York completed an online education program.
