Warhorse COO hopes GTA 6’s $80 price will set new standard for AAA titles

Summary

Warhorse co-founder Martin Klima said he wants Grand Theft Auto 6’s $80 launch price to encourage other AAA developers to raise their own game prices amid rising development costs.

Warhorse co-founder and chief operating officer Martin Klima told PC Gamer that, although he is not a fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, he hopes the upcoming title’s $80 launch price will establish a precedent for higher pricing across the triple-A market. He said the industry is struggling with layoffs and studio closures and that “the last thing you can do is to increase the unit price,” adding that “now, hopefully, GTA will blaze the trail, and it will allow us to increase the cost.”

Klima noted that Rockstar and its parent company Take-Two are among the few publishers able to risk a price increase, describing it as “long overdue and also necessary for this business to survive.”

The discussion comes as development budgets for large-scale games continue to rise while inflation erodes the purchasing power of the traditional $60-$70 price range. A recent Generations in Play survey found that 62 % of highly engaged gamers now wait for discounts rather than buying new releases at full price. Commenting on generational differences, report author Karl Stewart said Gen X players tend to value “midnight opening, full-price games,” whereas Gen Z gamers are more focused on community and ongoing platform experiences.
