Phillies eliminated by Braves 6-2 in Game 3 of wild-card series

Summary

Philadelphia lost to Atlanta 6-2 in the decisive third game of the National League wild-card series, exposing deficiencies in starting depth, bullpen reliability and right-handed hitting.

Philadelphia was eliminated from the postseason after a 6-2 defeat to the Atlanta Braves in Game 3 of the National League wild-card series on Thursday night. Early home runs by Michael Harris II and Ozzie Albies gave the Braves a lead that the Phillies could not overcome.

The loss highlighted the Phillies’ roster limitations, including a thin starting rotation, an inconsistent bullpen and a shortage of dependable right-handed batters. Kyle Schwarber described the outcome as “just as frustrating as last year, and the year before that.”

Interim manager Don Mattingly explained that Aaron Nola started because he was more rested than Zack Wheeler, noting Nola’s recent 2.77 ERA over his final ten starts. Wheeler, who pitched on short rest, allowed a fourth-inning homer to Albies after a walk to Austin Riley.

Philadelphia’s offense managed only two runs, a single by Schwarber followed by a double from Bryce Harper and an RBI groundout from Alec Bohm in the sixth, and another run in the seventh. Trea Turner, who went 1-for-11 in the series, said he will need to improve his offensive performance.

Atlanta’s reliever Chris Sale entered in the eighth and struck out Harper before closing the game in the ninth. The final out came on a swing-and-miss by Sale against pinch-hitter Otto Kemp.

After the game, Mattingly said the team’s failure to win the final game was a “crash landing,” and noted that the future of the managerial position remains uncertain. Several players, including Bryce Harper, indicated that the roster will look “a lot different” next season.
