The United Methodist Church has begun a formal inquiry into a complaint against Rev. Dale Caldwell, who resigned as lieutenant governor after a state probe found evidence of sexual harassment and ethics violations.

The United Methodist Church announced that it is processing a complaint against Rev. Dale Caldwell, former lieutenant governor of New Jersey, under its standard disciplinary procedures. Bishop Cynthia Moore-Koikoi informed members of the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference that the matter is being handled according to church policy, but did not disclose details about the nature of the complaint, its source, or timing.

Caldwell, 66, returned to his pastoral duties at Covenant United Methodist Church in Plainfield on Sunday, delivering a sermon titled “When Lies Become Weapons” that addressed false accusations and the reliability of investigations. He had stepped down as lieutenant governor on Friday after Governor Phil Murphy called for his resignation following a 61-page report that concluded Caldwell sexually harassed a staff member and breached state ethics rules by providing personal guests free admission to ticketed events and by advocating for a promotion for a state employee with whom he had a romantic relationship, without disclosing the connection.

Caldwell issued a written response denying the most serious sexual harassment allegation and contesting the report’s findings, stating that he was not given a meaningful opportunity to respond before its release. Governor Murphy’s office defended the independent investigation and upheld the decision to seek Caldwell’s resignation.

The church’s inquiry now proceeds separately from the state investigation, focusing on Caldwell’s role as a minister. Bishop Moore-Koikoi urged conference members not to pre-judge the case and asked for prayers for Caldwell, the congregation, and all affected by the process.
