HBO Chief Casey Bloys Poised to Lead Combined Paramount-Warner Streaming Operation

Resumen

Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, is expected to head the merged Paramount+ and HBO Max streaming services after Warner Bros. Discovery’s sale to Paramount, bringing his senior team with him.

Casey Bloys, who has overseen HBO and HBO Max through two previous mergers, said he was not surprised by the pending Warner Bros. Discovery sale to Paramount. Bloys, a 22-year veteran of HBO, is expected to lead the combined streaming operation, with his core team—including drama head Francesca Orsi, comedy head Amy Gravitt and HBO Max executive Sarah Aubrey—likely moving to Paramount as well.

The merger is slated to close on Oct. 6, and Bloys hinted that the two services may be offered as a bundled package rather than a full integration. He noted that HBO’s brand will remain distinct and that the strategy will focus on curating premium content while expanding the overall slate to include mass-appeal titles from Paramount+, such as Taylor Sheridan dramas and Tyler Perry comedies, as well as sports programming.

Bloys referenced past attempts to broaden HBO Max’s library, acknowledging that the addition of Discovery content had limited success, but citing the Emmy-winning series “The Pitt” as an example of a show that attracted a wider audience without diluting the brand. He also pointed to the compatibility of shows like “South Park,” which have performed well on both platforms.

Industry peers praised Bloys’s track record. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos called him “a super-talented guy” who will be in a strong position wherever he works, while Disney’s Dana Walden described him as “an incredibly savvy executive.” Bloys’s contract runs through 2027 and includes a clause requiring him to report to Paramount’s CEO, a condition that Paramount CEO David Ellison reportedly considers essential for retaining Bloys and his team.

Bloys acknowledged the challenge of merging two services with different subscriber bases, saying that HBO viewers tend to favor prestige television, whereas Paramount+ audiences are accustomed to broader, network-style programming. He said the goal will be to broaden the offering without compromising HBO’s value proposition, drawing on lessons from previous content experiments.

The combined service will also bring together extensive libraries, including the “Big Bang Theory” franchise and CBS-produced series, reflecting Bloys’s early career experience at CBS and his familiarity with both premium and mass-market programming.
