U.S. Deploys Third Aircraft Carrier Group to Middle East Amid Ongoing Iran Conflict
The United States is sending a third carrier strike group, including an amphibious force, to the Middle East, raising the naval presence to over 20,000 personnel as tensions with Iran persist.
The U.S. military announced the deployment of a third aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East, adding a specialist amphibious attack group to forces already in the region. The task force, which includes the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group with two landing ships, carries more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines. A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the additional carriers could arrive by the end of October, bringing the total naval presence to over 20,000 sailors and Marines and hundreds of aircraft.
The deployment follows earlier moves that placed the carriers USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington, as well as the USS Boxer amphibious group, in the area. The USS Washington, typically assigned to the Pacific, was redirected to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln after a prolonged deployment of more than 260 days at sea.
President Donald Trump, in a recent interview, indicated that further strikes against Iran remain a possibility after the November midterm elections, though he declined to provide details on potential targets. He also rejected a recent Iranian cease-fire proposal, describing it as insufficient, and reiterated opposition to Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.
"I can’t tell you that because look, you know, you’re asking, where are you going to bomb?" "It’s possible that it will help, because Iran will not have a nuclear weapon," Trump said.
The expanded naval presence underscores the evolving dynamics of the U.S. engagement in the region as political considerations in Washington intersect with ongoing military operations.
