Xbox expands disc-to-digital conversion program to all users

Résumé

Xbox has opened its disc-to-digital service, which converts physical game discs into digital licenses, to all console owners after an initial Insider rollout.

Xbox announced that its disc-to-digital conversion service, previously available only to Insider testers, is now accessible to all Xbox Series X and Xbox One owners. When a qualifying physical disc is inserted, the console automatically adds a digital license for the same game to the user’s library, while the disc remains usable.

The feature is intended to let players benefit from digital distribution, including cross-platform access through Xbox Play Anywhere and compatibility with cloud gaming. A support page notes that the digital license is linked to the physical disc, and losing or disposing of the disc could result in loss of the associated digital rights.

"As technology, devices, and distribution continue to evolve, preserving access to the games people own matters more than ever," Xbox said in an August statement.

The rollout occurs as Sony faces criticism over its plan to stop producing physical game discs by 2028.
