Head coach Andy Reid said Josh Simmons is making progress after being diagnosed with a bulging disc in his lower back, and the player remains on the active roster while rookie Kahlil Benson continues to start.

Kansas City head coach Andy Reid said left tackle Josh Simmons is working through a bulging disc in his lower back as the Chiefs approach their fourth game of the season. Reid noted that the condition has limited Simmons’s leg strength but that the player is attending daily practice and showing improvement.

Reid explained that the team has not placed Simmons on the reserve/injured list, keeping him on the active roster while monitoring his recovery. He said the medical exams indicate progress and that the team hopes to avoid surgery.

In Simmons’s absence, rookie left tackle Kahlil Benson has been starting, though Pro Football Focus recorded three quarterback hits against the Miami Dolphins. Benson is expected to continue protecting quarterback Patrick Mahomes while the team evaluates Simmons’s health in upcoming injury reports.

"[Josh] is making progress," Reid said. "The positive is that he is making progress and getting stronger," he added. "I think we’re heading in the right direction here, where that shouldn’t happen," Reid said regarding the possibility of surgery.
