Jonathan McKinsey, a New York Times Games engineering director, was found dead after being shot in a Dublin, California parking lot. Police arrested Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, who face first-degree murder charges.

Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old engineering director for New York Times Games, was discovered shot multiple times in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds on Saturday afternoon. A police sergeant who was driving by reported the incident, and McKinsey was pronounced dead at the scene, Dublin Police Services said.

Officers located Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, a married couple who live in Dublin, nearby and arrested them at Dublin Boulevard and Civic Plaza. Both suspects, aged 77, were booked into Santa Rita Jail without bail and are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, facing first-degree murder and additional felony charges.

Court records show McKinsey was involved in ongoing family legal disputes, including a divorce and child-endangerment charges stemming from allegations that he struck his children. He had pleaded not guilty to those misdemeanor charges and was under a domestic-violence protection order filed by his wife, Candice Jang. The couple was scheduled for a custody hearing six days after McKinsey’s death.

"He hit our son in the face with an open hand," Jang told police in October 2025, according to court documents.

"I was abused by him with a frying pan and he was forced to endure anti-LGBTQ+ slurs," McKinsey alleged in a petition filed in December.

The New York Times confirmed McKinsey’s employment and his recent promotion to director of engineering for games player experience. Authorities have not disclosed whether Jang was present at the time of the shooting. Police are asking anyone with information to contact Sgt. Ahmad Mateen.
