Giants acquire former Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy amid concerns over durability and consistency

The New York Giants announced the acquisition of quarterback J.J. McCarthy, a former first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota had concluded that McCarthy would not serve as its long-term solution at the position and moved him down the depth chart after a preseason ankle injury and inconsistent play.

McCarthy, 22, appeared in four of the Vikings’ final five regular-season games in 2025, starting three. Defensive coaches noted that he struggled to stay comfortable in the pocket and took a high number of hits. In the preseason, he completed five of six passes for 81 yards in one game but missed his final four attempts, was sacked, and sustained an ankle injury that caused him to miss the preseason finale. Head coach Kevin O’Connell subsequently named Kyler Murray the starter for Week 1, pushing McCarthy to third on the depth chart.

Analysts compare McCarthy’s situation to that of former first-round quarterback Trey Lance, who also faced limited development time on a competitive roster. Both players received early opportunities, encountered injuries, and then lost extended chances to improve.

The Giants’ coaching staff, led by head coach Brian Harbaugh, includes former offensive coordinators and position coaches with experience developing young quarterbacks. The team’s offensive scheme features moving pockets and run-pass options, which could align with McCarthy’s skill set. Harbaugh reportedly consulted with McCarthy’s college coach, Jim Harbaugh, before finalizing the trade, indicating familiarity with the player’s background and character.

The move gives McCarthy a new environment to compete for playing time, though the Giants are not expected to position him as an immediate franchise starter.
