Sony Plans Theatrical Rerelease of Spider-Man: Brand New Day with New Footage

Summary

Sony Pictures is preparing a theatrical rerelease of Spider-Man: Brand New Day that will include previously unseen scenes, including a cut cameo by Rosario Dawson, though a release date has not been set.

Sony Pictures is preparing a theatrical rerelease of the superhero film Spider-Man: Brand New Day that will feature previously unseen footage, including a scene with Rosario Dawson that was omitted from the original July 31 release. The company has not announced a specific date for the rerelease, and additional new material has not been detailed.

The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal, is the highest-grossing domestic title with more than $950 million earned in the United States and ranks third worldwide with $2.49 billion. It continues to earn box-office revenue, adding $4.1 million domestically over the most recent weekend.

The planned rerelease follows a similar strategy used for Marvel Studios’ Avengers Endgame, which was reissued in theaters earlier this year and generated $26 million domestically ahead of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday release.

At a fan event in July, Rosario Dawson said she had filmed a scene as Claire Temple for Brand New Day, but the footage was cut during editing. > "My character is somewhere in that same universe, and I really love that," Dawson said, adding that she hopes to reprise the role.

Industry analysts note that the rerelease could help the film approach the $1 billion milestone in the North American market, a benchmark it has not yet reached. Deadline previously reported on the planned rerelease.
