Federal investigation into ICE shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo continues as authorities withhold agent's identity

Resumen

A Houston ICE agent identified as the shooter in the July 2023 killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo remains unnamed by federal officials, while a Texas grand jury reviews the case amid multiple investigations.

Federal officials have not released the name of the ICE agent who fired the fatal shot at Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during a July 2023 pursuit in Houston, despite pressure from state lawmakers and the victim's family. The Harris County district attorney is convening a grand jury that could consider criminal charges, while the Texas Department of Public Safety, the FBI, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Department of Homeland Security each conduct separate probes.

The agent, identified in internal documents as "Feathers," has not been charged and DHS has defended the shooting as self-defense. A DHS spokesperson said releasing officers' identities could endanger them and their families, adding that ICE agents face “coordinated campaigns of violence” and citing large increases in assaults and threats since the Trump administration.

Family members of Salgado Araujo have called for transparency, stating that the lack of information hampers their ability to seek justice. Their attorney, Ruby L. Powers, emphasized that naming the officer is not an accusation of guilt but a basic element of accountability when deadly force is used.

Law enforcement experts note that most state and local agencies disclose the names of officers involved in shootings within days, often accompanied by body-camera footage. In contrast, federal immigration agents typically remain anonymous, a practice that critics say undermines public trust.

Congresswoman Sheila Garcia and other lawmakers have asked DHS for details about the agent’s training, employment history and compensation, but have received no response. The district attorney’s office says the grand jury process must remain confidential to protect the integrity of the investigation.

The case adds to a series of recent incidents in which ICE agents have used lethal force, some resulting in civilian deaths. Advocacy groups and civil-rights attorneys argue that federal agents should be subject to the same transparency standards applied to local police.
