Lions adjust defensive personnel in Week 3 win over Jets

Resumen

Detroit made several defensive and offensive lineup changes for its 31-24 victory over New York, highlighting increased roles for backup players and a shift in linebacker assignments.

Detroit improved its performance in Week 3, defeating the New York Jets 31-24 after making notable personnel adjustments on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Jared Goff played every offensive snap, while running back Jahmyr Gibbs handled the majority of carries but faced pressure from the Jets' blitz, prompting increased snaps for backup Sione Vaki, who was praised for his pass-protection work.

"The preparation going into these past two weeks, going out there and letting loose, and not being afraid to mess up. Being able to believe in myself, supported by running backs coach Tashard Choice and the boys in the room, has helped push me forward and has been a real confidence builder," Vaki said after the game. Wide receiver Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown saw slightly reduced snap counts as the Lions employed heavier 13-personnel and jumbo packages. Tight end Sam LaPorta remained the primary option, and the offensive line returned to its full five-man unit, allowing only eight pressures and two sacks. On defense, interior lineman Alim McNeill’s snap share was trimmed, giving rookie Skyler Gill-Howard more opportunities; he recorded three pressures and a half-sack. Edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson continued to dominate, posting five pressures and a half-sack, while DJ Wonnum saw his snap count rise and contributed two sacks. Linebacker Mike White, previously a starter, was a healthy scratch, allowing Malcolm Rodriguez to start at weakside linebacker and Trevor Nowaske to see extensive use across multiple positions. "I know I am a good linebacker in this league. I feel like I’ve done a good job in the preseason and when I’ve gotten my opportunities on defense," Nowaske said. In the secondary, Roger McCreary moved into a starting cornerback role, and Rock Ya-Sin shifted to a reserve spot. Safety Chuck Clark played every snap and recorded a game-sealing sack-fumble, while Christian Izien transitioned from nickel to strong safety, leading the team with 11 tackles. Special teams contributors also saw modest increases in participation as the unit continues to develop.
