iPhone 18 Pro May Mark End of Current Design Era

Summary

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro introduces several camera and battery upgrades, and analysts suggest it could be the last model to use the design introduced with the iPhone X before a major redesign next year.

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro adds a variable-aperture main camera, expanded pro-camera controls, an updated Photographic Styles suite, smart focus tracking and the ability to apply cinematic effects to standard video. The device also offers a slightly larger aperture that lets in roughly two-thirds of a stop more light, modestly improved battery life and faster charging, and a smaller Dynamic Island that can display three live activities at once.

Industry observers note that the iPhone 18 Pro may be the final iteration of the form factor that debuted with the iPhone X in 2017. Rumors indicate that Apple plans a significant redesign for the next generation, potentially tied to the company's 20th anniversary, which could replace the current slab-of-glass design with a new “single glass” concept. The upcoming model might be labeled the iPhone 19 Pro or skip directly to iPhone 20 Pro, depending on how Apple chooses to mark the milestone.

The iPhone 18 Pro builds on features introduced with the iPhone 17 Pro, such as a center-stage front camera, ultra-stabilised video, an 8× telephoto lens, ProRes RAW video, and incremental battery and charging improvements. Analysts say that while each yearly upgrade adds new capabilities, the overall user experience typically only changes noticeably after two or three generations, reflecting the maturity of premium smartphone technology.

"The variable-aperture lens will let in a bit more light, which should shorten Night Mode exposures," said a technology commentator familiar with the device.

"Smart focus tracking aims to keep the subject in focus even when it briefly disappears behind an object," the same source added.

If the redesign rumors prove accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro could represent the end of an era for Apple's flagship design, making its new camera and battery features the final enhancements to this long-standing aesthetic.
