U.S. and China agree to continue dialogue after Washington summit

Resumen

President Trump and President Xi concluded a three-day summit in Washington with limited concrete agreements, pledging future meetings and modest trade steps while analysts note the outcomes remain tentative.

President Donald Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington, D.C. for a three-day state visit, the first such trip by Xi since 2015. The leaders exchanged historic references to World War II cooperation and announced plans to attend the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November and the G20 summit in Miami in December.

Both sides also agreed to launch an artificial-intelligence dialogue within two months and to set up a channel for handling AI-related incidents, though the U.S. referred to “super intelligence” while China used the term “AI.” Trade discussions resulted in a commitment to reduce tariffs on about $30 billion of goods and to establish a working group on agricultural trade, with China indicating future coal imports of at least 10 million metric tons annually.

Analysts said the summit yielded few substantive breakthroughs. > "I'm concerned that this kind of diplomacy and this fragile detente is really unsustainable — if it doesn't result in more tangible outcomes or in addressing in some way the strategic challenges that are clearly manifest across the entire relationship," said Daniel Kritenbrink of The Asia Group. > "The deliverables on trade, rare earths, refined oil, investment, and AI are all quite limited and tentative," said Scott Kennedy of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Both readouts highlighted shared historical ties and a mutual stance against imposing tolls on international waterways, as well as a vague alignment on limiting Iran’s nuclear capabilities. No joint statement was issued, and Taiwan was not mentioned in the official summaries, suggesting limited progress on that issue. The summit concluded with a state dinner attended by more than 100 U.S. officials and business leaders, and a subsequent announcement that two giant pandas would be sent to Zoo Atlanta.
