Baker Mayfield sustains dislocated thumb in Buccaneers' loss to Vikings

Résumé

Quarterback Baker Mayfield suffered a dislocated thumb after an interception in Tampa Bay's 20-16 defeat to Minnesota, and was replaced for the final drive.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield sustained a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand after throwing an interception in the fourth quarter of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 20-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, head coach Todd Bowles said. Mayfield did not return for the team's final possession and was substituted by rookie Jalon Daniels.

Mayfield completed 17 of 34 passes for 217 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while the Buccaneers were sacked six times by the Vikings' defense. The injury adds to a challenging start for Tampa Bay, which has lost its first three games of the season, including defeats to the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns. Mayfield has been sacked 13 times this year, a rate that would project to 73 sacks over a full 17-game schedule.

The Buccaneers face a difficult stretch of games against the Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears before a Week 10 bye, a schedule that could become even more demanding without Mayfield.
