Patriots coach Vrabel says concern is high after Maye's three turnovers in 35-6 loss to Jaguars
Quarterback Drake Maye threw three interceptions in the Patriots' 35-6 defeat by Jacksonville, prompting coach Mike Vrabel to express heightened concern for the team.
Quarterback Drake Maye added three interceptions to his season total in New England's 35-6 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, giving him the league lead in giveaways. The Jaguars turned the turnovers into 14 points, extending their lead to 28-3 early in the third quarter.
Maye's first turnover occurred on the Patriots' second possession when the ball slipped from his hand before he could release a pass, a play later confirmed as a fumble. He later threw an interception to rookie defensive back Travis Hunter on a goal-line attempt, marking Hunter's first career pick. A third interception was made by cornerback Jarrian Jones, who returned the ball to the Patriots' five-yard line.
After the game, Maye said he needed to reflect on his performance, stating, "I can't get out of my own way, personally. I have to look myself in the mirror and take this as a turning point. We have to realize that what we're doing out there offensively is unacceptable. Starts with myself."
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel told reporters, "My concern level is very high for this football team. I just want to coach and improve. I think that's the biggest thing when you come off a game like that. You just want to get back and work."
Maye's seven turnovers in the game bring his season total to 15, a sharp rise from the 11 turnovers he recorded over 17 games in the previous season when he earned All-Pro honors and finished as the MVP runner-up. The Patriots must address the turnover issue to remain competitive in their pursuit of a repeat AFC championship.
