Sen. John Fetterman says Democrats could regain Senate control, will reassess his own plans after midterms

Résumé

Sen. John Fetterman said it is possible for Democrats to win back the Senate in the 2024 midterms and indicated he will decide his future political moves after the election.

Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania told reporters at the Texas Tribune Festival that a Democratic majority in the Senate is "entirely possible" after the 2024 midterm elections and that he will "revisit" his own political plans after the vote.

Fetterman, who won a closely watched race in 2022, said he has no intention of leaving the Democratic Party and emphasized that he is not a Republican. He added that any decision about his future, including a possible run in 2028, will be made after the midterms.

The senator noted that recent polling shows Democratic Senate candidates gaining ground in several states and praised Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s recruitment efforts, saying there is no indication of a leadership change if Democrats win control.

Fetterman also highlighted policy differences with some members of his caucus, citing his stance on government shutdowns and Israel, and said he prioritizes "the country over the party" when disagreements arise.
