Democrats Outline Broad Oversight Agenda Should They Gain House Majority
House Democrats plan extensive investigations into the Trump administration and related entities, with impeachment among the options they may consider.
Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said the party intends to hold officials accountable for alleged misconduct if Democrats win control of the House. He emphasized that Congress has significant authority to oversee the executive branch and that a roadmap for investigations is already taking shape through frequent letters to the administration and court filings.
Lawmakers are focusing on a range of issues, including the Trump family’s financial activities since the president’s return to office in January 2025, possible civil-rights violations linked to ICE operations, and the shutdown of federal programs such as the Kennedy Center and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Recent disclosures that a wedding for Donald Trump Jr. received funding from a Russian oligarch have added to the inquiry.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, who is expected to chair the Judiciary Committee, described the matters as "gargantuan" and called for swift action on systemic corruption that has cost the public large sums of money. He noted that legislative remedies may be available.
While impeachment of President Trump remains a possibility, Jeffries indicated that the party may also target cabinet members, citing ongoing impeachment articles against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Jeffries said, "We haven't ruled anything out, and we haven't ruled anything in."
Democratic members slated to lead key committees have outlined their priorities. Rep. Robert Garcia, the incoming chair of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, listed investigations into Trump family business dealings, the administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, and ICE operations. He also mentioned scrutiny of the Department of Health and Human Services under Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and broader corporate corruption allegations.
Rep. Gregory Meeks, the prospective chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, said his panel will examine Trump’s international activities, including the Iran conflict and U.S. actions in Venezuela. Rep. Jared Huffman, ranking member of the Natural Resources Committee, indicated his committee will look into the president’s construction projects and the Trump family’s involvement in mineral deals. Huffman added that, if Democrats assume control, the committee will call witnesses, administer oaths, and pursue evidence wherever it leads.
