Ohio former pastor and ex-American Idol contestant on trial for wife’s murder
Caleb Flynn, a former pastor who appeared on American Idol, faces aggravated murder charges after his wife was shot dead in February; prosecutors say he discussed killing her with his lover, while the defense argues the affair does not prove guilt.
An Ohio jury is hearing the case of Caleb Flynn, 40, a former pastor who briefly appeared on American Idol, accused of shooting his wife, Ashley Flynn, twice in the back of the head on Feb. 16. Prosecutors allege Flynn acted to be with his then-girlfriend, Alleigha Botner, and staged the scene to resemble a home invasion. Flynn has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder, two counts of felonious assault and three counts of tampering with evidence.
The prosecution presented text messages and AI-generated love songs stored on Flynn’s phone that referenced his desire to be with Botner. A video shown in court featured a voice-over in a Christian-rock style singing, “That first time I saw you the room disappeared, love at first sight even though I was scared… Life is now empty, since the moment I lost you.”
“At first it was: I want her dead. I wish she was gone. And then it was: if I could kill her and not go to jail, I would. And one night, he was up really late – he told me he was thinking about ways to kill her,” Botner, now 24, testified.
Botner said Flynn repeatedly expressed hatred for his wife in texts and told her in February that he was planning a divorce. She testified that she did not trust Flynn’s promises and was moving on with her life.
Flynn’s defense acknowledged the affair but argued it does not constitute murder. Attorney Emily Smith said, “A man can make selfish decisions without committing a crime.”
Ashley’s sister, Kayla Keyt, testified that she was unaware of the affair and initially believed Flynn was innocent until the FBI disclosed the relationship. The trial is expected to conclude by the end of next week and will resume on Monday.
