Tech CEOs Attend Trump-Dinner with Chinese President Xi Jinping

Résumé

U.S. tech leaders, including Elon Musk, Tim Cook and Jensen Huang, joined President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping for a dinner where artificial-intelligence safety is expected to be discussed.

President Donald Trump hosted a dinner that included first lady Melania Trump, Elon Musk, OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, former Apple chief Tim Cook, and Chinese President Xi Jinping and first lady Peng Liyuan. Vice President JD Vance and his spouse sat at a separate table.

Both Altman and Mark Zuckerberg were noted for recent statements on AI safety, with Altman supporting shared safety standards and Zuckerberg emphasizing that AI labs can self-regulate development speed. Huang, dressed in traditional business attire, sat at the main table alongside Trump and Xi.

Nvidia has faced U.S. export restrictions on its H20 chips, reporting a $2.5 billion loss in shipments for a recent quarter and a $4.5 billion charge for unsold inventory. The company has excluded China data-center chip revenue from its forecasts.

Musk, a major donor to Trump and owner of Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, previously suggested that the United States and China should peer-review each other’s leading AI models. His aerospace firm SpaceX provides a large share of U.S. orbital launches.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai was observed speaking with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Google plans capital expenditures of $195 billion to $205 billion this year, second only to Amazon’s projected $220 billion.

Amazon does not operate its marketplace in China but has expanded its warehousing and distribution network at three major Chinese ports to ship goods to the United States. Other attendees included executives from BlackRock, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, LVMH and Lockheed Martin.
