Xi calls for U.S.-China cooperation on artificial intelligence

Resumen

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the United States to focus on collaboration rather than competition in AI during a White House meeting, while both sides discuss establishing a bilateral AI dialogue.

Chinese President Xi Jinping told President Donald Trump that the United States and China have greater opportunities for cooperation than competition in the field of artificial intelligence. In remarks delivered in the Oval Office, Xi said the two sides could continue AI dialogue, exchange views on risks and benefits, and work together to prevent misuse or malicious applications of the technology. He added that while competition exists, cooperation is even more important and that humans must retain control over AI to ensure it supports human progress.

The United States has recently limited China's access to advanced semiconductors used for training AI models and has accused Chinese firms of illicitly acquiring American AI capabilities. Concerns have grown that increasingly autonomous AI systems could accelerate attacks and complicate response efforts.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, after meeting Chinese negotiators in New York, said the two countries had discussed creating a "U.S.-China AI Dialogue" and the United States had proposed an alert system for AI incidents. China’s Commerce Ministry confirmed that senior trade negotiators held their first AI talks with U.S. counterparts on Thursday.
