Former lover testifies about affair and alleged murder plot in Caleb Flynn trial

Résumé

Alleigha Botner, the alleged mistress of former "American Idol" contestant Caleb Flynn, testified for two days, detailing their 1.5-year affair and sharing messages in which Flynn expressed hatred toward his wife and discussed killing her.

Alleigha Botner took the stand in the murder trial of former "American Idol" contestant Caleb Flynn, reading excerpts from a series of bound volumes that reproduced more than 100,000 text messages exchanged during their 1.5-year relationship. The messages, prosecutors said, revealed Flynn’s animosity toward his wife, Ashley Flynn, and his contemplation of her death.

Flynn, who has pleaded not guilty to the February killing of his wife, admitted to sending the messages but denied any involvement in the homicide. His defense argues that the prosecution lacks physical evidence, such as the murder weapon, to link him directly to the crime.

Botner, then 21, described meeting Flynn at an Ohio church in 2022 and beginning a romantic relationship in March 2024. She testified that the affair was frequent, that they exchanged roughly 300 texts per day, and that they obtained matching Harry Potter lightning-bolt tattoos, with Flynn’s placed in a concealed location to avoid his wife’s notice.

During the testimony, Botner read messages in which Flynn referred to his wife with a derogatory nickname and wrote, "I just want her dead and gone," and later, "If I could literally kill her and not go to hell, I would do it in a heartbeat."

Botner also recounted her own text to Flynn on July 2025, "I want to kill her, Caleb," to which Flynn replied, "That makes two of us." She said she later regretted the statement and did not mean it.

The former lover said she deleted some messages and initially gave false statements to the FBI out of fear for her reputation, but later cooperated with investigators. On cross-examination, Botner expressed uncertainty about Flynn’s true feelings toward his wife, noting occasional affectionate texts from Ashley, yet she concluded she now believes Flynn murdered her.

Flynn’s attorneys highlighted the lack of direct forensic evidence, while prosecutors emphasized the motive suggested by the extensive correspondence presented in court.
