Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald and Broncos coach Sean Payton dispute over training-camp video scouting resurfaces

Summary

A 2024 interview revealed that Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald discussed using fan-recorded Broncos training-camp footage, prompting former Broncos coach Sean Payton to accuse the Seahawks of cheating; the interview segment was later removed after both coaches expressed regret.

Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said his staff compiled about 100 fan-recorded clips of the Denver Broncos' training camp before their Week 1 meeting in 2024, using the footage as part of the team's scouting preparation. Macdonald told interviewer Graham Bensinger that the Broncos had allowed the recordings, which he considered legitimate scouting material.

Former Broncos coach Sean Payton learned of the video use and contacted Seahawks general manager John Schneider, alleging the Seahawks had cheated. Payton threatened to make a public accusation similar to the NFL's past Spygate scandal, while the Seahawks warned they would consider legal action if Payton pursued the claim.

During the interview, Macdonald later said he had unintentionally disclosed details he did not intend for public release. Bensinger said the full interview, including the Payton story, was provided to Seahawks public-relations staff for review five days before it aired, and the team did not flag the segment for removal. After the interview was posted online, Macdonald expressed concern, prompting Bensinger to remove the portion, though clips had already been circulated.

Both coaches issued apologies. Macdonald said he must be more careful about what he says on camera, and the Broncos announced that recording equipment is now prohibited at their training camp. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Week 6.
