NYC Mayor Faces Criticism for Unequal Remarks on Israeli and Iranian Leaders

Résumé

Mayor Zohran Mamdani was praised for calling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a war criminal but drew criticism for not using comparable language regarding Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during his UN General Assembly visit.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has repeatedly described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a "war criminal" and an "architect of genocide," prompting calls for his arrest if he enters the city. The mayor’s comments have been contrasted with his relative silence on Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who arrived in New York for the United Nations General Assembly this week.

Iranian-born journalist Masih Alinejad, who survived an attempted kidnapping in Brooklyn, tweeted that Mamdani should apply the same standard to Pezeshkian, noting the mayor’s earlier statements about arresting war criminals. Alinejad also referenced a federal investigation that linked the Iranian regime to a murder-for-hire plot against her.

National security official Walter "Jay" Clayton said the Iranian government has a history of sponsoring terrorism and assassination attempts abroad. Meanwhile, Israeli U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon urged Mamdani to focus on local issues and refrain from what he described as anti-Semitic rhetoric.

Critics, including Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton, highlighted the disparity in Mamdani’s rhetoric, questioning why similar language has not been applied to the Iranian president, who is scheduled to speak at the UN.

Fox News Digital reported that the mayor’s office was contacted for comment but did not receive a response.
