Former film producer Harvey Weinstein received a 15-year prison term for a 2006 sexual assault of former production assistant Miriam Haley, concluding a multi-year legal process.

Harvey Weinstein was sentenced in Manhattan on Wednesday to 15 years in prison for a first-degree criminal sexual act involving former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006. The sentence follows a retrial last year that reaffirmed his conviction after an earlier 2020 verdict was overturned by the New York Court of Appeals.

Weinstein, 74, faced a maximum of 25 years and has already served more than six years while his case moved through the courts. Haley, who testified at both trials, said the assault has had a lasting impact on her sense of security. > "Having been sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein has had a devastating effect on my life and sense of security that may never go away," she said.

Weinstein, who maintains his innocence, offered an apology in court. > "Reflecting on all that has happened since 2017 has helped me recognize how my past conduct has negatively affected others. I live with many regrets and sincerely apologize to anyone I have affected with my actions," he said.

Judge Curtis Farber noted Weinstein's former status in the film industry and described him as “the literal face of the MeToo movement.” He added that Weinstein’s legacy as a producer will be eclipsed by his criminal conduct.

Haley expressed satisfaction with the sentence but said Weinstein had not fully accepted responsibility. > "I think he still feels entitled, and that's part of the problem," she said.

Attorney Gloria Allred, representing Haley, rejected claims that the sentencing marks the end of the MeToo era, stating that women are now more empowered than before.

Weinstein’s health issues, including blood cancer and heart problems, were cited by his defense as a reason for a shorter term, but the judge imposed the 15-year sentence. The former producer remains under medical supervision at a prison hospital unit while he prepares to appeal the decision. He also faces a separate resentencing in a California rape case.
