Surfer Fatally Attacked by Shark at Sydney's Long Reef Beach
A 57-year-old surfer was killed in a shark attack at Long Reef Beach in Sydney, leading to the closure of nearby beaches and ongoing investigations.
A 57-year-old man was fatally attacked by a shark while surfing at Long Reef Beach in Sydney on Saturday morning. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. local time, approximately 100 meters from shore. Despite immediate rescue efforts by fellow surfers, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Police Superintendent John Duncan reported that the victim had suffered catastrophic injuries and had lost a significant amount of blood. The man's identity has not been confirmed, but he was known to be an experienced surfer with a wife and young daughter.
Authorities have closed beaches from Manly to Narrabeen as a precaution and are working with wildlife experts to determine the species of shark involved. Drones and lifeguards on jet skis are patrolling the area to monitor for further shark activity.
This marks the first fatal shark attack in Sydney since February 2022, when a swimmer was killed off Little Bay Beach. Prior to that, the city had not experienced a fatal shark attack since 1963.
Surf Life Saving NSW has extended condolences to the victim's family and urged the public to stay out of the water in the affected areas.
