Swiss Tourist Killed, Companion Injured in Shark Attack on Australia's East Coast
A Swiss woman was killed and her male companion critically injured in a shark attack at Kylies Beach, New South Wales, Australia.
A Swiss woman in her 20s was killed, and her male companion critically injured, in a shark attack at Kylies Beach in Crowdy Bay National Park, New South Wales, Australia, on Thursday morning. The pair were swimming around 6:30 a.m. when the incident occurred. Emergency services responded promptly, but the woman died at the scene. The man sustained serious leg injuries and was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in critical condition. A bystander applied a makeshift tourniquet to the man's leg, an action praised by authorities for potentially saving his life.
The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed both individuals were Swiss nationals and stated that the Swiss Consulate General in Sydney is providing support to their families.
Authorities have closed Kylies Beach and deployed drumlines to identify and capture the shark involved. Experts believe a large bull shark was responsible for the attack.
This incident follows a fatal shark attack two months prior at Long Reef Beach in Sydney, where a surfer was killed.
"The courage shown by this [bystander] is amazing," said NSW Ambulance Superintendent Josh Smyth. "To put yourself out there is very heroic, and it did give us time to get that male patient."
