Coroner rules Hayden Panettiere's death an accidental overdose involving fentanyl and other drugs

Résumé

The Greenville County coroner determined that actress Hayden Panettiere died from toxic levels of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office concluded that the 36-year-old actress died on Aug. 16 from an accidental overdose of multiple substances, including fentanyl, the fentanyl precursor 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. The report noted no signs of trauma that could have contributed to the death.

Police responding to a cardiac-arrest call found Panettiere unresponsive in a South Carolina apartment complex where she was staying. The Greenville Police Department said the initial investigation revealed no foul play, and the case remains active. The Drug Enforcement Administration is also examining the death.

"When used in combination, there’s a synergism," said former DEA Los Angeles field division special agent Bill Bodner, who highlighted that the drug mixture—often referred to as the "Holy Trinity"—is highly dangerous.

Bodner explained that the presence of 4-ANPP suggests the fentanyl detected was likely illicitly manufactured. He added that investigators will analyze Panettiere’s phone records and social-media activity to reconstruct her final days and identify the source of the drugs.

Panettiere’s boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, was present at the apartment and provided a bag of medication reportedly belonging to her. Hickerson’s attorney declined comment, and Panettiere’s mother also did not respond to requests for comment.

The actress, known for roles on “Heroes” and “Nashville,” had previously spoken about personal struggles, including postpartum depression and addiction, in a memoir released shortly before her death. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the overdose.
