Apple CEO John Ternus discusses iPhone Duo design and AI approach on Canal+ interview
Apple chief executive John Ternus explained the foldable iPhone Duo’s design choices, reiterated Siri’s role as a tool rather than a companion, and said he sees no radical shift in Apple’s product strategy.
Apple chief executive John Ternus spoke to Canal+’s talk show Clique after the company’s September event, focusing on the new iPhone Duo foldable phone. He said the device’s unfolded shape was chosen to provide a large-screen experience that aligns with Apple’s long-standing iPad design, rather than simply joining two phone halves together.
"We wanted a new aspect ratio that felt right for a large screen, building on what we’ve done with iPad," Ternus explained.
He noted that developing the Duo involved numerous engineering challenges, particularly around the hinge mechanism and display durability, and described the project as an opportunity for Apple engineers to devise novel solutions.
"There were many problems to solve, and the foldable format let us be creative and create entirely new things," he said.
When asked about a favorite feature, Ternus demonstrated the device’s opening animation, describing it as a light-hearted visual effect.
Regarding artificial-intelligence assistants, Ternus reaffirmed Apple’s position that Siri is intended as a functional tool rather than a personal companion.
"Siri isn’t designed to be your friend; we don’t aim to replace human relationships," he stated.
Ternus also addressed speculation about his succession to Tim Cook, saying the suggestion was unexpected but he had not considered it before. He emphasized continuity in Apple’s focus on innovation, product quality, and customer experience, indicating no major strategic shift under his leadership.
"The focus on innovation, products, and customers has never changed since the company’s beginning," he said.
He reflected on the tradition of ending Apple presentations with a “one more thing” line, noting that delivering it was a memorable moment for him.
