Presley Gerber's death under investigation as possible overdose

Summary

Police in Santa Monica are treating the 27-year-old model's death as a suspected overdose, with the medical examiner deferring the cause pending further tests.

Police in Santa Monica, California, said they are investigating the death of model Presley Gerber as a suspected overdose. Gerber, the son of supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber, was found unresponsive at a rehabilitation center on Sunday and was pronounced dead at 9:45 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County medical examiner's office.

The Santa Monica Police Department told ABC News that there were no signs of foul play. The medical examiner's office issued a statement indicating the case is in the early stages of investigation, with a deputy medical examiner having performed an examination and deferred the cause and manner of death pending additional testing. The statement noted that deferred cases can take several months before a final determination is made, and the body will be released to the family.

Sources familiar with the case said Gerber had checked into the rehab facility the day before his death. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time. Gerber, who had been signed by IMG Models at 15 and worked with brands such as Moschino, Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein and Celine, had previously spoken publicly about his mental-health and substance-abuse challenges.
