Maryland hunter charged with manslaughter after fatal shooting of woman in Delaware field

Résumé

A 74-year-old hunter was arrested and charged with manslaughter and related offenses after police say he shot a woman he thought was a deer in Ellendale, Delaware.

Delaware State Police arrested Walter Moorhead, 74, of Salisbury, Maryland, on manslaughter charges after he fired his rifle from a ground blind in an open field on Sept. 18, mistakenly shooting Maria Chilel Soto, 39, of Georgetown, Delaware. Troopers arrived at the scene around 7:40 p.m. and found Soto, who was walking with a man and two children, critically injured. She was transported to a hospital where she later died. Moorhead told investigators he believed he had sighted a deer. He was taken into custody at the scene and released after posting a $43,000 cash bond. Authorities also charged him with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment. The homicide unit continues its investigation.
