Patriots defeat Steelers 20-3 in home opener
New England earned its first win of the season, beating Pittsburgh 20-3 while dealing with injuries and showcasing contributions from young players.
New England secured a 20-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in its first home game of the season on Sunday, improving to 1-1. Quarterback Drake Maye completed the win despite an uneven performance, including a sack and a few throwaways, while the Patriots’ defense limited the Steelers to a single field goal.
Running back TreVeyon Henderson returned after missing the season opener and contributed a 39-yard touchdown run, a play that stemmed from effective blocking by Morgan Moses and DeMario Douglas. The Patriots also saw notable contributions from rookie defensive players, including former undrafted free agent Elijah Ponder, who recorded a sack and a defensive touchdown, and rookie Gabe Jacas, who intercepted a pass.
Injury concerns were highlighted as several Patriots players left the game with various ailments, and wide receiver A.J. Brown was confirmed to miss at least four weeks. The team’s depth will be tested in the coming weeks.
Defensive standouts included Christian Elliss, who recorded a sack on Aaron Rodgers, and cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who effectively limited DK Metcalf’s impact. Coach Mike Vrabel expressed frustration with two questionable officiating calls involving Steelers player Marcus Jones, though overall officiating was deemed acceptable.
The Steelers struggled offensively, with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers completing 187 yards, two fumbles and an interception. The Patriots will travel to Jacksonville next week to face the Jaguars.
