Bucs quarterback Mayfield says early loss hurts more as team falls to 0-2

Résumé

Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield said the defeat to Cleveland feels worse because the team is winless, after a 23-19 loss that erased a third-quarter lead.

Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield said the team’s Week 2 loss to the Cleveland Browns hurts more because Tampa Bay is now 0-2 on the season. The Buccaneers entered the game with a 10-point lead in the third quarter but surrendered it before a lengthy weather delay in the fourth, ultimately falling 23-19.

Mayfield, who began his NFL career with the Browns before being traded, was asked whether the defeat was more painful because it came at the hands of his former club. > "It just stings more because we’re 0-2," he replied.

The Buccaneers committed four turnovers in their opening-week loss to the Bengals but only one against Cleveland. However, they left two red-zone drives empty-handed and had several second-half possessions that ended in quick punts, allowing the Browns to stay competitive.

"Frustrated because it’s close," Mayfield added. "You can feel it. You can see it. We’re moving the ball at times, and then just shooting ourselves in the foot. So, that makes it more frustrating when you know you’re right there."

Analysts noted the Buccaneers need a more consistent offensive strategy quickly, or Mayfield could see reduced playing time before his contract extension takes effect next year.
