Florida records first dengue-related death as local outbreak grows

The Florida Department of Health confirmed a dengue fever death, bringing the total to 134 cases in Hillsborough County this summer and prompting renewed public-health alerts.

The Florida Department of Health said an elderly woman who died on Sept. 4 was the first confirmed dengue-related fatality in the state. The death occurs amid a summer surge that has produced 134 locally acquired cases in Hillsborough County, leading the county health department to issue a mosquito-borne illness alert in August.

Dengue fever, transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that thrive in warm, urban environments, can cause high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, and a rash. Most infections are asymptomatic, but about 25 % develop symptoms that appear four to ten days after a bite. A minority of patients—roughly one in twenty—progress to severe dengue, which can involve fluid leakage, low blood pressure, bleeding and organ damage.

"Early recognition and prompt hospital care reduce the mortality rate of severe dengue from around 10 % to less than 1 %," a Florida infectious-diseases physician explained.

The virus circulates in four distinct strains; infection with one provides lasting immunity only to that strain, while a subsequent infection with a different strain raises the risk of severe disease. No specific antiviral treatment exists; care focuses on fluid replacement and fever management with acetaminophen, while avoiding aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs because of bleeding risks.

The World Health Organization reported more than 14 million dengue cases worldwide in 2024, a sharp increase from 2000. Warmer temperatures, rapid urbanization and international travel are expanding the range of the mosquito vector into new regions, including parts of the southern United States. Florida has the highest risk among the states, with Miami-Dade County documenting over 300 locally acquired infections between 2010 and 2024, and sporadic cases also reported in Texas, California, Arizona and Hawaii.

Health officials advise residents to use insect repellent, wear protective clothing and eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed. Anyone who develops a sudden fever after mosquito exposure in South Florida should seek medical attention, stay hydrated and monitor for warning signs such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or bleeding.
