Browns weigh quarterback options as Watson's role remains uncertain

The Cleveland Browns are evaluating their quarterback roster ahead of the upcoming games. Team insiders suggest that Deshaun Watson is likely to remain the active second-string quarterback until third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel, who is on injured reserve, returns from a back injury. Some analysts note that the coaching staff may also consider giving Taylen Green a backup role for the next two contests, especially if Shedeur Sanders earns the starting job.

If Watson does see playing time, he would face a challenging environment, as fans have expressed strong disapproval in recent outings. Should Gabriel be cleared, Watson could stay on the roster as a mentor, though there is speculation that the team might release him to allow a fresh start.

Regarding the recent third-round selection of Dillon Gabriel, the Browns reportedly conducted a private workout at Oregon before evaluating him at a showcase in Colorado. The organization believes Gabriel has developmental potential and could serve as a reliable backup in the league.

Defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg is being urged to adjust the scheme, emphasizing more man-to-man coverage and increased pressure to compensate for the absence of edge rusher Myles Garrett. He is also encouraged to utilize the strengths of cornerbacks Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell.

Head coach Todd Monken, not owner Jimmy Haslam, is said to have the final say on quarterback decisions. Monken reportedly prefers Watson for his experience with multiple cadences and dual-threat abilities, though recent performances have raised questions about his effectiveness.

General manager Andrew Berry has been credited with recent successful drafts, positioning the Browns with a promising group of young players. The franchise hopes that continued development and strategic drafting will improve its competitive outlook in the coming seasons.
