Blizzard developer says World of Warcraft: Forever beta sees unprecedented player numbers

Summary

The beta for World of Warcraft: Forever attracted more participants than Blizzard anticipated, prompting technical issues that were later resolved.

Blizzard reported that the public beta for World of Warcraft: Forever attracted a level of player traffic that surpassed the studio’s expectations. The surge caused server disconnects and lag, but the company said the issues were addressed by the end of the testing day.

WoW Classic developer Josh Greenfield posted on X that the beta generated "the craziest numbers" he has seen in his 17-year tenure at Blizzard and described the experience as "something really special." Senior game producer Tom Ellis also explained that the beta ran on a test environment rather than a production-grade system, which limited its capacity and led to login bottlenecks.

Ellis noted that after the initial problems were fixed, the beta resumed smoothly and the team continued monitoring for any remaining issues. The game, a vanilla-style spin-off built by the Classic team, is scheduled for a global launch on November 4.

Blizzard confirmed the title at last week’s BlizzCon, ending speculation that the project, previously hinted at by internal tags, would be a new iteration of the franchise.
