Nvidia CEO urges rapid AI development while pledging safety standards

Résumé

Nvidia founder Jensen Huang told CBS News the industry should continue advancing AI quickly, emphasizing that products must be safe and ready before release, amid growing calls for regulation.

Nvidia founder and chief executive Jensen Huang said the technology sector should maintain a swift pace in artificial-intelligence development, but only deliver products that are fully ready and safe. In an interview with CBS News senior business and technology correspondent Jo Ling Kent, Huang stated, "We should go as fast as we can irrespective of anybody else. We're going to go as fast as we can, but we would never ever, and never should, ship products before they're ready, deliver products that are unsafe." He added that the public expects Nvidia to succeed and contribute to national prosperity.

The remarks come as industry leaders and researchers have recently warned that the rapid growth of AI could outpace safety measures. Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned, citing concerns that companies are prioritising speed over security, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei echoed the need for caution, saying the industry has long downplayed risks and that the technology’s exponential development is a warning sign that a slower pace may be required.

Nvidia, valued at over $5 trillion, has benefited from the AI surge, but the company faces scrutiny as policymakers and experts debate the need for guardrails and possible regulation.
