Netflix cancels "Sweet Magnolias" after five seasons and orders new drama "Ladies of the House"

Résumé

Netflix has ended the romantic drama series "Sweet Magnolias" after five seasons and commissioned a new series, "Ladies of the House," created by Sheryl J. Anderson and starring JoAnna Garcia Swisher.

Netflix announced the cancellation of the romantic drama "Sweet Magnolias," which starred JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley, after five seasons. The streaming service simultaneously ordered a new drama titled "Ladies of the House," based loosely on Lauren Edmondson's novel. The series will be overseen by creator Sheryl J. Anderson as showrunner, with Swisher expected to star and serve as an executive producer through her Rolling Clover banner, alongside Kate Gordon and Black Label Media.

The premise follows the widow of a winery owner and her two adult daughters as they navigate family dynamics, business challenges, and personal relationships, with support from friends and the winery itself.

"I’m thrilled to be embarking on this new adventure with JoAnna and Netflix," Anderson said, adding that the novel provided a foundation for a series focused on three women dealing with family, friendship and romance.

Swisher said she fell in love with the novel’s characters and expressed excitement about continuing to create female-driven stories with Anderson and their production partners.

The news was first reported by Deadline.
