Pentagon reports $45.1 billion cost of Iran conflict to Congress

Resumen

The Department of Defense told lawmakers the Iran war has cost $45.1 billion to date, exceeding previous estimates and lacking detailed breakdowns of indirect expenses.

The Pentagon informed Congress on Friday that the United States' military operations against Iran have incurred costs of $45.1 billion. The figure includes $43.6 billion recorded through September 3 and an additional $1.5 billion for extra fuel, according to two sources familiar with the briefing.

The estimate does not represent a complete accounting; it omits the cost of repairing damaged bases and buildings and provides no detailed breakdown of indirect expenses, a source said.

The new total exceeds the Congressional Budget Office’s projection of $38 billion for the conflict through August 1 and is higher than the Pentagon’s own July estimate of $37.5 billion. The CBO’s earlier figure also excluded repair costs and was based largely on munitions spending, noting that the war could continue to cost $2 billion to $3 billion per month beyond August 1, with higher outlays during periods of intensified fighting.
