Suspect in Chatsworth Metro bus crash misses first court appearance

Résumé

Bailee Lynn Rios, charged with second-degree murder and DUI after a fatal bus collision, failed to appear in court due to medical reasons, and her condition remains unclear.

Bailee Lynn Rios, 36, of Simi Valley, was scheduled to appear in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday after being arrested for a Metro bus crash in Chatsworth that killed two people and injured five others. She was transported on a gurney but did not enter the courtroom, citing medical issues.

A video released by authorities shows Rios with blood on her face seated in a severely damaged SUV, requiring firefighters to cut her from the vehicle. The extent of her injuries has not been disclosed.

Prosecutors allege Rios was speeding and under the influence of drugs when she ran a red light and collided with the bus. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said Rios faces charges of second-degree murder, DUI and reckless driving, with bail set at $4.03 million. He added that no request to reduce the bail amount has been made.

"We will hold Ms. Rios fully accountable for her actions. She didn't have to blow through the red light at full force and that was a choice by her," Hochman said at a news conference.

If convicted, Rios could receive a life sentence. Court records indicate she has prior drug offenses and has driven on a suspended license.

A community vigil was held at St. John Eudes Church to honor the victims of both the bus crash and a nearby helicopter crash that occurred later that night. Mayor Karen Bass expressed condolences, saying the city mourns with the families.
