The New York City Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) posted an Instagram carousel on September 10 that warned against both AI alarmism and hype, arguing that they distract from present-day harms. The post, created by the DSA’s Tech Action Working Group, attracted more than 25,000 likes and sparked debate within the organization.

Progressives are split on whether to prioritize regulation of existing AI applications or to address theoretical risks posed by advanced models. Alan Dang, a Tech Action member, said, "AI has become the latest tool of capitalist exploitation. The damage that unregulated and misused AI is already causing is clear across the country. As socialists, we don’t trust these corporations to craft their own regulations."

Other left-leaning strategists, citing Senator Bernie Sanders, argue that both current and future dangers must be tackled together. Alexander McCoy, a Democratic AI strategist, stated, "The same people concerned about frontier governance and the development of superintelligence are also addressing those current harms. Those frontier AI abilities are true and increasing in power."

Sanders has promoted AI safety legislation, linking a data-center moratorium to broader federal regulation aimed at protecting humanity’s future. His stance has drawn criticism from AI researcher Timnit Gebru, who accused left-wing leaders of echoing extreme doomsday narratives.

Rumman Chowdhury, founder of the nonprofit Humane Intelligence, noted that heightened attention on AI safety may ultimately benefit frontier labs by prompting them to disclose risk assessments during upcoming IPOs. Pragathi Barusubramanian of the DSA’s Tech Action group emphasized that on the ground, activists are more concerned with corporate data-center projects and immediate job impacts than with speculative existential threats.

Within the broader progressive movement, figures such as Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have focused on data-center impacts and economic risks while acknowledging that AI can be dangerous without safeguards. As a Politico poll shows two-thirds of Americans perceive some risk of AI causing humanity’s destruction, the left’s internal debate centers on which regulatory priorities to champion at federal, state and local levels.
